On Wednesday, the Fraud department from Barclays delivered their first ever assembly to Year 11 and Sixth Form during PSHE.
The idea behind the assembly was:
- To help educate people at a younger age, particularly because most will either be just starting out, or about to start in their financial endeavours, so to protect them from fraud and scams is a key driver behind this activity early in their financial lives. For example – messages on social media offering services or goods that are scams, and see if they can spot what, why, where the inaccuracies are or the behaviours that would indicate that it was a fraud or scam. This would be the interactive element.
- Raise awareness regarding a worrying trend in older children and younger adults whereby they are being approached to effectively money mule and take a “cut of the earnings” through “investment”. This age range is the prime target for this type of fraud/scam with severe consequences for them and their credit ratings should they fall victim.
The delivery was faultless, informative and thoroughly enjoyed by the students and staff present. The live input from the Barclays headquarters in London was exciting and a team of 12 helped answer questions and provide further insight.
I would like to take the opportunity to thanks Paul and Miguel who have worked incredibly hard to ensure the content was age appropriate and delivered in an engaging manner.
