The 1st XI and 2nd XI travelled to Merchant Taylors Crosby on Wednesday afternoon and contested two extremely tight games of hockey.

The Second XI played first and dominated large periods of the game. Carus and Smith were comfortable at the back and allowed the players in front of them to be more creative and look to go forward. After a few early chances, a good strike from a Smith short corner was turned in by Coyne at the back post. In the second half there was little between the teams, with Anselm’s maybe slightly edging the half, but Snagg was called into action late to make an important couple of saves. The game finished 1-0, meaning the Second XI remain unbeaten after their 1-1 draw last week at Kings School Macclesfield.

The First XI followed and started the game well with Wong unlucky not to score early on at the back post. Merchant Taylors then dominated for large spells of the half with Rivers making some outstanding saves and Smithies making an important goal line clearance from a short corner. In the second half again we had to absorb a lot of pressure from our opponents, but some excellent play from Sedgwick meant we still didn’t concede. Court and McIndoe both had chances late on, but both narrowly missed.

The game finished 0-0 which was a fair result and the boys showed a tremendous attitude against a tough opposition.

Rivers was voted man of the match by the whole team for keeping the team in the game with a flurry of saves.

Well done to all the boys who represented the College.
