On Wednesday 20th March, Sian Phillips, sister of old Anselmian journalist Dom Phillips, addressed Key Stage 4 Assembly about Dom’s life and death.
Dom, who was in the same year as Mr Duggan at the College, was a music, football and campaigning journalist who became involved in the environmental cause of the Brazilian rainforest in the 2010s, married a local woman, and was murdered in the Amazon basin in 2022 whilst campaigning actively on behalf of local tribes and against the encroachment and exploitative practices of businesses who were acting with impunity, unimpeded by the Bolsanero government. Sian agave a fascinating talk covering Dom’s life and career, from his days at the College (1975-82), through university, the national music scene and into journalism and activism. She felt that his most important legacy was raising awareness of the plight of the indigenous peoples and the exploitation of the beautiful rainforest.
