ST. ANSELM’S COLLEGE CURRICULUM VISION FOR MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (MFL)
VISION A highly ambitious curriculum in Modern Foreign Languages is one that challenges all language learners to take risks in their learning and develop informed opinions about the world around them. Our curriculum focuses on learning, rather than teaching; we want students to reflect on and enhance their linguistic skills, be inquisitive learners, enjoy challenge and become curious and interested in languages.
INTENT – summary of the thinking behind your curriculum design and its sequencing
Modern Foreign Languages requires a spiral curriculum, one that repeatedly refers back to and embellishes core concepts such as grammar, vocabulary and phonics. We aim to stimulate curiosity and develop a love for learning foreign languages beyond the classroom.
IMPLEMENTATION – summary of the pedagogy to be used to effectively deliver the curriculum
Key Stage 3 (KS3) is the building blocks for Key Stage 4 and 5 (KS4/KS5). It is the foundation of knowledge and introduction of key skills. Year 7 introduces the key skills needed to develop knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and phonics. Students continue to develop and grow in confidence during Year 8 and by Year 9 students will have mastered a number of key grammatical concepts as well as being confident with phonics and having a breadth of vocabulary.
IMPACT – the long-lasting impact your curriculum will have on our students
Students will follow a pathway which will broaden their horizons and deepen their cultural knowledge and understanding. Our curriculum will enable students to become enthusiastic independent learners. Furthermore, their mastery of skills and knowledge acquired will open doors for them in Europe and the wider world.
