Dear Parents and Carers,

We have now reached the end of our first full week of term and a momentous one of national mourning and remembrance. We have paid our respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at assemblies, in Form Time prayer, and by flying the flag at half-mast. We have also opened a Book of Condolence which we intend to send to Buckingham Palace.

The Bank Holiday on Monday means that the College will be closed. It will be a short week for the boys as we have a Staff INSET Day on Friday 23rd September, the day of our Entrance Examination for boys in Year 6. The College will be closed to all our students.

Thank you to all boys, and their parents, who helped at Open Evening. It was well-attended and a great success. Our visitors were fulsome in their praise for their tour guides!

Last Friday we bade farewell to our much-loved Librarian Ms Gill Ashton, after 12 years distinguished service at the College. I am pleased to confirm that Mrs Alison Powell is returning to the staff to cover the Library until a successor is appointed. If you know of a suitably qualified Librarian, please encourage them to contact me!

I am delighted to advise you that the College has been awarded an International Schools Award Accreditation certificate by the British Council for our involvement in the Connecting Classrooms “Edmund Rice Schools Against Waste” project.

Our sporting season has now begun with our 1st & 2nd XI Hockey teams both recording hard fought victories at Bolton School on Wednesday. Tomorrow it is the turn of our rugby players as we take on old rivals Birkenhead School. Congratulations to Michael Phelan (Y8) who has been selected to represent the North of England in the London Marathon Mini Race this weekend.

We are holding our Information Evening for Year 12 parents and students in the Hall on Tuesday 20th September. FOSA will be meeting in Outwood at 6.30pm and parents are welcome to attend, particularly if you would like to join our committee and support future events.

I hope that you and your families enjoy the Bank Holiday within the context of this time of national mourning and reflection.

Yours in Christ,

Simon Duggan
