Dear parents/carers,

Today our staff spent time in reflection and spiritual formation with Fr. Michael Coughlan and Mr. Dermot Rainey, a CSI inspector. Together, we explored the sacred mission and distinctive identity of a Catholic school.  We delved into the rich teachings of Catholic Social Teaching and the 8 Essentials of Edmund Rice – pillars that shape not only our curriculum, but every aspect of our life together as a faith community. This afternoon, we reviewed our Mission Statement, something we look forward to inviting you to contribute to also.  Our day concluded with the celebration of Mass.

This evening, we will gather to celebrate a truly momentous occasion — the 50th anniversary of Friday Club.  What began half a century ago, with a simple request from a group of Anselmian boys seeking something meaningful to do on a Friday night, has grown and grown.  Brother Kerrigan, headmaster at the time, agreed to their request but with one powerful condition: the youth club must open its doors to local adults with learning difficulties, and the boys must ensure that every single person felt welcomed, valued, and uplifted.

That seed of compassion, planted 50 years ago, has flourished into something extraordinary. Through changing times (including the challenges of Covid, when it adapted online thanks to the innovation of a devoted student President) the Friday Club has never wavered in its mission. It continues to offer joy, connection and laughter every week, through bingo, music, pool, and of course, the Friday quiz. More importantly, it challenges our students to grow in empathy, service and to strive each day to be the best version of themselves.

The stories that have emerged over the years are a testament to its impact. Just recently, we heard from a couple, who first met at Friday Club 44 years ago, and their own son, Joe, who met his wife Laura there 20 years ago. What a legacy of love and community!

We also send our best wishes to all those embarking on the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition this weekend. I hear that the first group, expected back this afternoon, completed their journey in record-breaking time, which is good news, as the majority of them are travelling onto Chelmsford to compete in the National Final School Athletics Competition!

Best of luck to all our National Finalists!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Cubbin
