Dear parents and carers,
we have been observing Holocaust Memorial this week in preparation for today’s commemoration on the theme of “Ordinary People”. All Year groups have attended a special assembly where our students have prayed for the victims of genocide and made Statements of Commitment for the future. Their conduct was exemplary.
I am sure that you are aware of the industrial action called by the NEU on 1st February, next Wednesday. This is the only professional association taking such action on Wednesday, so the College will remain open for all students. They will broadly follow their normal Wednesday Week A timetable, but there will be some variations owing to staff absence. Year 10, 11 and 6th Form students should bring revision materials for all subjects.
Mrs Cubbin has asked me to remind you that all students must arrive at the College wearing office-style black shoes (6th Form colour variations allowed). Some boys have been wearing trainer-style shoes which are not acceptable. Our rules are perfectly clear, and details are on the website.
Our Lady’s Church invites local Catholic boys to attend their Youth Group “Pizza and Prayer” sessions on the first Monday of the month from 6.30-8pm. Their next meeting is on 6th February. This will include a focus upon confirmation preparation and is especially, but not exclusively, aimed at boys who attended Our Lady and St. Edward’s and Holy Cross primary schools.
Unfortunately, our rugby fixtures were postponed last Saturday. However, the 2nd XV defeated St. David’s College 34-12 on Wednesday and the Hockey 1st XI defeated Birkenhead School 4-1 with the 2nd XI drawing 2-2. I look forward to reminding Mr Taylor of this in due course! Tomorrow, we play renowned opponents King’s School Macclesfield at all rugby age groups. On Wednesday our senior runners will compete in the King Henry VIII Relays in Coventry, a prestigious national event.
Mr Rumsby reminds you that the battle of the Bands Final is held at the Future Yard in Birkenhead on Sunday evening, from 6pm.
On a sad note, I am sorry to inform you of the death of Canon John P Marmion, old Anselmian and priest, whom I knew for nearly 40 years. The Canon was a renowned parish priest and scholar and probably the oldest living Anselmian. He was present on the day the College opened in September 1933, as a Redcourt pupil!
May John rest in peace.
Yours in Christ,
Simon Duggan
Headmaster
