On 2nd December in Woodbridge, Suffolk, the Intermediate Cross Country Team finished a highly creditable 3rd Place in the English Schools Cross Country Final. This means that we are the 3rd best U15s team in the country.
The team had to travel across the country and were given the worst draw in the starting pen allocations. One observer said: “We are drawn out in the car park!” Despite these difficulties and sub-zero temperatures, the team, in typical Anselmian fashion, responded with dogged performances. All six runners delivered outstanding runs.
Captain Jac Chapman led the team out with steely determination and was leading the race after a mile. Michael Phelan, in a characteristic gutsy performance, worked his way through the field to become our first counter. Our leading pair were swiftly followed by Matthew Merriman, Malachi Harty, George Goulding and Chris Jamieson. These four runners, all ahead of the main pack, stood up when it most counted and posted massive runs on the highest school stage. Credit should also go to Toby Price who was an excellent supportive reserve.
Old Boy Tom Roberts, College Cross Country Captain 2022-2023, made the journey from his university halls in Norwich to cheer the boys on.
Mr Allkins, Dr Cooper, Mr Haggard Kearney, Mr and Mrs Goulding were all exhausted.
King Henry relays is the first race of 2024, so other schools better watch out!
Mr J Allkins and Dr C Cooper.
