The Head of the Maths programmes and the LJMU Data Science Research Centre lead a thought provoking and inspiring workshop on Tuesday, 13th December to a group of A-Level Mathematicians. The talk focused on what Maths undergraduate students go on to do in the real world, the types of careers available and give real life examples of his own work with industry, which can dip into: Public Health, medicine, football, music, crime and more.

Data Analytics
The workshop looked at data analytics is the science of analysing raw data to make conclusions about that information. Big data offers many insights that are helpful for predicting crimes before they can occur. This process usually involves predictive analytics techniques, such as reviewing historic data in order to forecast geographical hotspots for criminal activity so that the appropriate resources can be directed toward crime prevention.
Data Science
Data science is a “concept to unify statistics, data analysis, informatics, and their related methods” in order to “understand and analyse actual phenomena” with data. It uses theories and techniques drawn from many areas. Data science is related to data mining, machine learning, big data, computational statistics and analytics.
Statistics
This is an era in which managing mountains of consumer data is becoming significantly important. The growth and development of new mobile apps, social media channels and much more. Marketing companies and consumer sales operations rely on statisticians to unpack all of this information for their businesses to stay successful. Statisticians lie on the more analytical and mathematical side of the spectrum, as compared to data scientists.
