ST. ANSELM’S COLLEGE CURRICULUM VISION FOR HISTORY
VISION A highly ambitious curriculum in History helps to explain the world as it is by exploring the world as it was, in a exciting and challenging way. Understanding is developed  around a spine of British History which is complemented by an international dimension. Enquiries revolve around global, national and local issues and emphasises the complexities of the past, in particular the contested nature of past events. We envisage developing critical thinking skills which allows them to explore the past from multiple perspectives and view points. We aim to make our curriculum representative of a broad range of past inhabitants who have lived ranging from those who lived in medieval England to those who experienced Nazi Germany and the Russian Revolution. The threads are combined and sequenced to craft a rich, broad and structured understanding of the past for every pupil.
INTENT – summary of the thinking behind your curriculum design and its sequencing
The History curriculum at St Anselm’s College is geared towards producing ‘citizen historians’ by helping change how our students see themselves, the world around them and their place within it.
IMPLEMENTATION summary of the pedagogy to be used to effectively deliver the curriculum Increasing historical knowledge , curiosity, critical thinking and communication skills are of course central to our curriculum. Increased knowledge of the past allows students to develop a sense of their own identity and their place within society. The curriculum will allow them to build confidence and to construct arguments which take into account a range of different perspectives. Whether it be the impact of the French language on English, evolution of medicine or understanding why dictatorial forms of government still prevail in Russia today, students will be able to acquire an understanding of the similarities and differences between contemporary and past socieities and understand the nature of change. Moreover, students are encouraged to question the legitimacy of the reputation acquired by historical figures such as Winston Churchill.
IMPACT – the long-lasting impact your curriculum will have on our students
In short, we seek to equip students at St Anselm’s College with the knowledge and skills so that they can successfully interact with the liberal, democratic society in which we live. The ability to construct coherent and convincing arguments, based on a critical analysis of historical material is central to this.
