Going to the Match by LS Lowry
Going to the Match, painted in 1953, is LS Lowry’s best-known and most popular picture. For a short time this summer the painting is being displayed at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead. The painting’s iconic status has been recognised and loved by visitors of all ages: especially those who love football and those who celebrate this quintessentially Northern experience. Alongside the iconic Going to the Match, other works by Lowry and a selection of pictures from the Williamson’s collection are also on display placing Lowry in the wider context of painting in Northern England in the mid 20th Century.
Year 8 students visited the Gallery where along with the Lowry exhibition also provided an opportunity for students to explore the Williamson’s permanent collection including artworks, ceramics, sculptures, and maritime history. A temporary exhibition of contemporary work by the North Wales Society of Fine Arts is also on display at the gallery.
Students travelled to and from the gallery on foot on the hottest day of the year! Whilst there, the students explored the whole of the gallery before working through a series of drawing tasks in which they focused on works in the gallery that were of particular interest to them.
The students thoroughly enjoyed their visit, and were on their best behaviour, representing the College in this public space with exemplary conduct. Indeed, as we were preparing to leave the Williamson Art Gallery, members of the public wanted to let us know how well behaved and respectful our students were in the gallery and that they were a credit to the College. Congratulations Year 8, what wonderful feedback to hear. A big thank you to the many staff who made visit possible and enjoyable.
