Navigating the Waves of Low Mood: A Student’s Perspective
We asked a student in Year 12 about his views on managing mental health.
“GCSEs and A’ Levels have been a rollercoaster of academic pressures, social expectations, and personal challenges, I have experienced periods of low mood. These feelings were not always the same, ranging from mild sadness and feeling like I couldn’t be bothered to more intense feelings of anxiety and sometimes depression. I feel that I’ve had my fair share of emotional ups and downs. However, through recognising when I was beginning to feel low in my mood, I have been able to be more proactive beginning to use my coping mechanisms, and with the help of my parents, close friends, head of year and form tutor, I have had a really supportive network around me. I’ve learned to navigate these waves of low mood and come through them each time. Asking for help and actually using the strategies suggested have all really helped. I have been able to support some of my friends when they have struggled”
By acknowledging emotions, prioritising self-care, finding healthy outlets for expression, practicing mindfulness, seeking support, and, when necessary, seeking help, we can empower ourselves to manage these challenges and maintain our well-being. Remember, you are not alone, and there are many resources available to support you.
