In accordance with our Mission statement as a Catholic College, St Anselm’s College will seek to ensure that all of the requirements of the Education Act of 1944, 1993 and 1996, the Children’s Act 1989 and the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2014, regarding a pupil’s entitlement to an education suitable to their age, ability and aptitude and any special educational needs, will be fully met. We want all of our students to thrive, feel safe, succeed and enjoy school.

We work closely with our feeder primary schools to ensure that all of our new Year 7 students make the transition to secondary school successfully.

Each student who accepts a place at the College receives a visit from a member of staff at their primary school in the summer term. The teacher from the College will meet with the Class 6 teacher and the primary SENDCO. Parents of children with a special educational need can request a meeting with a member of our SEND team, if they wish to do so.

At the start of Year 7, pupils sit a standardised, adaptive assessment (NGRT) to measure reading skills against the national average. To identify where intervention may be needed, and then to monitor impact and progress made.

A range of support strategies are available, these include:

  • Support in the classroom from the class teacher
  • Learning Mentor support
  • Support from our Youth Worker
  • Access arrangements for examinations, including the use of a laptop, prompter, a reader or rest breaks
