ST. ANSELM’S COLLEGE CURRICULUM VISION FOR GEOGRAPHY
VISION The vision of Geography at St Anselm’s College is to provide a geographical education where students are enthused and enjoy studying Geography and to ensure that all students have a significant awareness of the interconnectedness of human and physical processes that shape the world in which they live whether they leave us at the end of KS3, KS4 or KS5.
INTENT – summary of the thinking behind your curriculum design and its sequencing
The intent behind our Geography curriculum is to lead students on a journey of discovery beyond their own lived experiences.  We aim to stimulate their natural curiosity as young people and provide them with a rich, varied and challenging insight into natural processes and human behaviours shaping our world. The Geography curriculum uses a spiral curriculum model to ensure that substantive knowledge is secured in a cycle that maximises the potential for students to form synoptic links between topics to allow them to extend and remember knowledge learnt. At Key Stage 3 the content covered is more ambitious than the National Curriculum and at GCSE and A Level we follow the AQA specification for Geography.
IMPLEMENTATION – summary of the pedagogy to be used to effectively deliver the curriculum
A six common lesson format is delivered for all Geography lessons. There are a variety of activities in class – student and teacher led – and these are planned to ensure all students can maximise their learning potential. Reading and oracy is integrated in the KS3-5 Geography curriculum as part of this. There is embedding of current, contemporary case study examples within topic schemes of work to enthuse students. Extension of classwork is enabled through homework set on Satchel:One which allows for further learning opportunities using new terminology quizzes at KS3 and extension reading and research-based activities at KS4-5. Finally, all students have formative assessments in the form of Progress Tasks (every 4-6 lessons in each topic), end of topic exam assessments and finally, the whole College end of year assessments which are dictated by the College calendar. All assessments test prior and new knowledge and get students to apply knowledge to novel situations so students can demonstrate their knowledge effectively.
IMPACT – the long-lasting impact your curriculum will have on our students
Students will leave the College as environmentally aware critical thinkers. This will not only support their transition into higher education or training but also allow them to reflect on their Geography lessons in later life and encourage them to make decisions that work in harmony with the environment.
