The Careers Interview Process at St. Anselm’s College

Every Year 11 pupil in will have an interview with an independent Careers Advisor. They will be asked about their favourite subjects, their least favourite and whether they have a particular preference between practical and written subjects.

They are asked about what they do in their spare time in terms of hobbies, interests, achievements and memberships of clubs, teams or associations.

They will be asked about their career aspirations and whether they are interested in any particular sectors. They will be questioned as to why they think a particular career might be suitable for them.

Pupils are made aware of a range of options available. These include, but are not limited to:

    • St. Anselm’s College Sixth Form
    • Birkenhead Sixth Form College
    • Wirral Met
    • Specialist colleges (LIPA, Reaseheath, SAE, sports academies)
    • Other school Sixth Forms
    • Apprenticeships
    • University

Pupils are asked what, if any further support they might require to help them make sound career choices. An action plan is then generated with agreed targets and backup plans. These are available for pupils and will be emailed to parents.

    Interview Order

Career Interviews for a year group begin as soon as all the previous Year 11 pupils have been seen. By the time those Year 11 pupils are engaged in public examinations, the following Year Group begin their interviews. These begin with those classified as Pupil Premium, all of whom have a one-to-one meeting with the independent Careers Specialist. These are followed by SEND pupils who again have one-to-one meetings. This usually takes until the end of the summer term, after which pupils will have progressed to Year 11. From then on, pupils are interviewed in Form order and alphabetical order. The Head of Year 11 or other members of staff can request that a pupil “jumps the queue” if circumstances would benefit the individual. Parents may request an earlier appointment which can be accommodated. Parents are welcome to attend these appointments.

All pupils will have responded to a questionnaire posted in May each year to ascertain which sectors they are most interested in in terms of their future career. Pupils with the same sector aspirations can then be interviewed in small groups of two or three. Pupils with unique career aspirations will be seen individually.

Each pupil’s action plan will be emailed to their parents shortly after their appointment.
